July 5th – DiamondDawgs Decimate Outlaws 17-3

DiamondDawgs  Decimate Outlaws 17-3

By: Team Press Release

LITTLE FALLS, NY—The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs came into Tuesday night’s game at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Little Falls only racking up double-digit runs once this season, having to sweat out an 11-10 victory over the Utica Blue Sox.

Tuesday night, however, no sweat was needed for number two.

The Diamond Dawgs took advantage of seven Oneonta errors, scoring in every inning but the seventh in a 17-3 drubbing of the Outlaws.

The Diamond Dawgs got on the board first by virtue of cleanup hitter Michael Ketchmark’s (Dallas, TX/Dartmouth College) line drive RBI double that got all the way to the wall in left-center field. That hit would score Drew Arciuolo (Milford, CT/Fairfield University). That would be all starter Tyler Brown (Hudson, NH/Northeastern University) would give up in the first, as he would force Mike Martinez (West New York, NJ/Rutgers University) to ground out to end the inning.

Brown would walk Andrew Turner (King of Prussia, PA/Long Island University-Brooklyn) and hit Tanner Leenknecht (Billings, MT/Treasure Valley CC) to start the bottom of the second inning and quickly find himself in a first-and-second jam. Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Wagner College) would make him pay with a looping drive over the second baseman’s head to score Turner and extend the Mohawk Valley lead to two. Justin Fowler (Aliso Viejo, CA/Dartmouth College) would extend the lead on another looping ball that would drop between the second baseman and center fielder and score Leenknecht. The lead would grow even further with Arciuolo’s drive down the right field line that would score Mazzio. Kevin Radziewicz (Cromwell, CT/Fairfield University) extended the lead to five on a grounder into the shortstop-third base gap that would score Fowler. All of this would happen before Brown even recorded an out in the inning. After that out, Ketchmark would pick up his second RBI of the night, scoring Arciuolo on another grounder to the left field gap. Turner would come back up to bat in the inning, and an error by the first baseman would score Radziewicz. In all, eleven players came up to the plate for the Diamond Dawgs in the inning, battering Brown for five hits and six runs in the second.

The pain would only get worse in the bottom of the third inning, as an error by Cameron Coons (Gansevoort, NY/Alvernia University) would put Radziewicz on base and score Arciuolo.

Chandler Engel (Chapin, SC/Wofford College) would pull the Outlaws back, albeit slightly in the fourth, as he would crush a home run to center field to score himself and Coons.

Brown would start off the bottom of the fourth with two straight doubles by Ketchmark and Martinez to quickly put himself in a second-and-third. Turner and Leenknecht would make him pay by scoring them both with groundouts that would advance both of them home.

Yet again, Brown would give up a hit, this time a hit and an error in the fifth by Arciuolo that would send him all the way to third base. That would be the end of the day for Brown, as he would be replaced by Mark Giallanzo (Oneonta, NY/St. Bonaventure University). Arciuolo would get home two batters later, as Mac Crispino would triple and bring him home. Crispino would have an easy trip home as well, as Mike Martinez would score an RBI single to bring him home. Leenknecht would get in on the scoring, as an RBI single and an error by the center fielder would score Ketchmark.

Garrett Kelly (Hollister, CA/UC Davis) would keep the runs coming for Mohawk Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning, as his sacrifice fly would score Arciuolo. Ketchmark would hit his third double of the night soon after to score Radziewicz. Tanner Wessling (Kent, WA/University of Tennessee-Martin), in his first at-bat of the night, would get into the scoring party himself, as his RBI single would score Ketchmark.

Leeknecht would add even more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, as his RBI single would score Kelly.

Suffice it to say, a fifteen-run cushion would be all relievers Lucas Godlewski (Little Falls, NY/Monroe CC) and Zachary Vennaro (New Hartford, NY/Monroe CC) would need, but not before Jimmy Hand (Cedartown, GA/Northeastern University) would smash one out of the park to pull Oneonta (16-12) within fourteen. However, that was as far as the Outlaws would get, as Vennaro would only allow two baserunners the rest of the way to mercifully end the night for the Outlaws.

DeSarro picked up the win for Mohawk Valley, his fourth straight. Brown was saddled with the loss for the Outlaws.

For Mohawk Valley, their 17-run output Tuesday night was the most they have put out in two years. Almost exactly two years ago, they beat the Adirondack Trail Blazers by the same score at the Robert Smith Sports Complex.

The Diamond Dawgs (14-13) head down Route 5 to Donovan Stadium on Wednesday as they will visit their neighborhood rival, the Utica Blue Sox. The Outlaws head home to Damaschke Field to face the Saugerties Stallions
