LITTLE FALLS, NY – It’s been a rough season already for the Glens Falls Dragons. One might ask how it could possibly get worse for a team that is 4-16 and has had half of their games called early thanks to the mercy rule.
Monday night in Little Falls, it got worse.
Thanks to three Mohawk Valley home runs, including a grand slam from Pete Durocher (Emerson, NJ/Manhattan), the Diamond Dawgs ran roughshod over the Glens Falls. Mohawk Valley scored seven in the very first inning, adding nine in the fourth for a 16-0 mercy-rule win over the Dragons. It’s the fourth straight mercy-rule loss for Glens Falls.
Mohawk Valley started off their game with every hit you could think of – a double from Evan Berta (Yorktown Heights, NY/Fairfield), a triple from Pete Durocher (/Manhattan), and home runs from Alfredo Delgado (Bronx, NY/Manhattan) and Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE/Goldey-Beacom). All of that equated to seven runs on just six hits, with Delgado and Awtry accounting for five of those runs.
RBI singles from Orlando Pena (/Coastal Carolina) and his former teammate, Ernesto Polanco (West New York, NJ/Charleston Southern) put the Diamond Dawgs up by ten. A two-RBI single, ripped to left field by Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ/Goldey-Beacom) scored another two and put the mercy rule into effect for the fourth straight time. They wouldn’t stop there, as Durocher slammed a ball into left field to close the book on the Dragons’ sixth straight loss.
Colin Gauthier (Pawtucket, RI/Rhode Island College) got the win for Mohawk Valley (9-9), while Will Conroy (South Glens Falls, NY/Millersville) was saddled with the loss for Glens Falls.
The Diamond Dawgs will be back in action at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Tuesday for the second and third of five games in Little Falls this week. They’ll take on the Saugerties Stallions in a doubleheader, which will start at 5 PM. The Dragons will have an off day on Tuesday before traveling to take on the same Saugerties team on Wednesday.
