DiamondDawgs Defeat Wizards

WATERTOWN-Watertown (11-17) gave ups eight runs (one earned) to begin the game and could never rebound. It falls to Mohawk Valley (12-13) 15-1. Joe Michaud (Bryant) got the win (4-1), while Mike Peters (Alcorn St.) took the loss (0-2).

A wild pitch, two passed balls and two errors led to the runs in the first three innings. Mohawk Valley took advantage of the mistakes. The big hit was a two-run ground rule double in the second by Tyler Hall (Herkimer C.C.) He finished 2-5 on the night with two runs scored, but it was Tyler Heck (Union) who had the best night of all. He went 3-6 with three runs scored, two RBI’s and three stolen bases.

Michaud was lights out. He didn’t allow a run in seven innings and struck out eight. Peters was hurt by some shaky fielding. He gave up seven runs (one earned) in two innings, walked two and struck out four. Three relievers combined to finish the game.

DiamondDawgs defeat league-leading Mohawks

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs finally broke through against Amsterdam Thursday when they defeated the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League-leading Mohawks 11-7 at Shuttleworth Park.

Beaten by Cooperstown in extra innings Wednesday, the Mohawks have suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this summer. The win was Mohawk Valley’s first in six tries against the Mohawks this summer and second in 13 games over two seasons.

Thursday’s game was tied entering the seventh inning when the DiamondDawgs took the lead for good. Matt Gage walked Tyler Heck to start the inning then threw the ball away on a bunt by Chris Cruz, allowing Heck to score and giving Mohawk Valley a 5-4 lead. Cruz wound up at third base on the error and scored on a one-out single by Jack Morrow. Tyler Hall singled with the bases loaded and two outs; Morrow scored and the inning ended with center fielder Demarcus Henderson throwing Mark Stuckey out at home plate.

After Amsterdam got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, the DiamondDawgs scored three more in the eighth. Mohawk Valley loaded the bases with nobody out against Matt Gallup. The Mohawks got the first out on a force play at the plate and Gallup fanned Morrow for the second. Stuckey then cleared the bases with a double to left field that made the score 10-5.

Heck drove in a run in the top of the ninth and the DiamondDawgs took a six-run lead into the bottom of the inning. Chase Williamson homered against Raymond Morton leading off. The Mohawks took advantage of an error to add a second run and left a runner at second base to end the game.

Morrow and Stuckey each had three hits and three runs batted in. Eric Helmrich, Hall, Hassan Evans and Heck each had two of the DiamondDawgs’ season-high 16 hits. Heck scored three runs.

Jesse Buratt made his first start on the mound for the DiamondDawgs and allowed one earned run on six hits over six innings to earn his first PGCBL win. He struck out five batters and walked two.

Mohawk Valley is off for the second time in three days Friday and plays at home Saturday, July 7 against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.

Joe Michaud Hurls 15 Strikeouts in DiamondDawgs Win

Mohawk Valley DiamondDawg starting pitched Joe Michaud (Bryant) picked up his third win of the season as he pitched a gem of a game recording 15 strikeouts. Michaud pitched seven innings giving up five hits, no runs, threw a wild pitch and hit two batters. Taylor Wright (Brown) came in for one inning giving up two hits and one unearned run and hurling two strikeouts. Salvatore Lisanti (Bryant) closed out the game with an inning pitched and a strikeout. The result was a 7-1 victory over the Glens Falls Golden Eagles.

Golden Eagle starter Ryan Peterson (Yavapai) took the loss going six innings and giving up seven hits, three earned runs, and six strikeouts and hit a batter. Jake Doller (Kansas State) came in to relieve Peterson and pitched two innings giving up four hits, four runs (two earned) while walking, striking out and hitting a batter.

The DiamondDawgs offense was led by Jack Morrow (Young Harris) who had two homeruns in the game, the first a three run shot in the sixth. He finished the game with two runs scored and four RBI. Eddie Sorrondo (Delaware State) and Mark Stuckey (Marist) both went 2 for 4 and added two runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Heck (Union) added a 2 for 4 performances with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. David Del Grande (Sacramento State) picked up an RBI on his 1 for 5 performances and both Hassan Evans (Herkimer C.C) and Tyler Hall (Herkimer C.C) secured hits.

Glens Falls was led by Ross Kivett (Kansas State) who went 1-4 with a run scored, Chase Griffin (Georgia Southern) who went 1 for 3 with a double and Mike Vigliarolo (Northwestern Oklahoma A&M) with a RBI and a 2 for 4 night.

The DiamondDawgs return home Sunday night against the Amsterdam Mohawks for a 5:05 game.

Evans, Hall lead DiamondDawgs to victory

Herkimer County Community College teammates Hassan Evans and Tyler Hall made significant contributions Sunday to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs’ soggy 10-2 victory over the Watertown Wizards.

Evans hit his first home run of the season and drove in four runs as the the DiamondDawgs won for the fourth time in five games and Hall had three hits and two runs batted in.

Evans, a Division I Delaware State recruit from Brooklyn who is living with Hall’s family in Fonda this summer, got the scoring started with a three-run home run in the second inning at Veterans Memorial Park. Jesse Buratt had drawn a one-out walk from Ryan Filipowicz and Evan Wolf had singled before Evans, hitless in his last nine at-bats and batting .138 with one RBI, cracked his three-run home run.

Evans added a run-scoring single an inning later and scored a run on Hall’s two-run single. Eric Helmrich had started the inning with a tripled and scored on a hit by Eddie Sorondo as the DiamondDawgs took a 7-1 lead.

Jack Morrow added a home run in the fifth inning and Helmrich hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Batting ninth, the SUNY-Cortland-bound Hall reached base in all four of his plate appearances. He singled in the second, third and eighth innings and was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth when he scored on Helmrich’s fly ball.

Hall and Evans were 5-for-7 combined with six runs batted in and reached base six times in the bottom two spots in the Mohawk Valley batting order.

Cameron Sorgie threw seven inning and earned his first Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League victory. The SUNY-Albany right-hander struck out 10 batters, walked three and allowed two runs on four hits. Duanesburg High School graduate Aaron Casper struck out three batters in two innings of relief.

Leadoff batter Donald Walter went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the fifth inning for Watertown.

Defensively, Mohawk Valley played its third error-free game of the season. The DiamondDawgs have won all three games in which they have not committed an error. They had erred in 10 consecutive games and committed 27 errors during that stretch.

Following a trip to Glens Falls Monday, the DiamondDawgs play their next two games against Amsterdam’s league-leading Mohawks. Mohawk Valley plays at home Tuesday and, following a day off Wednesday, visits Shuttleworth Park Thursday.

Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs continue hitting well in rout over Watertown

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs were back to Veteran’s Memorial Park for a Perfect Game Collegiate League (PGCBL) Sunday matinee against the Watertown Wizards. The DiamondDawgs offense exploded for ten runs to help secure the team’s seventh win of the season in a 10-2 rout.

Cameron Sorgie (UAlbany) pitched seven innings for the Dawgs and gave up four hits, two earned runs, walked three and recorded ten strikeouts for his first win of the season. Aaron Casper (Canisius) came in to relieve Sorgie and pitched two innings giving up one hit and walking three and recording three strikeouts.

Wizards’ starter Ryan Filipowicz (Holy Cross) was pounded for seven earned runs on nine hits and walked three with two strikeouts and picked up his second loss of the season. Bryan Burns (Plattsburgh State) came in for relief but allowed three more runs, two of which were earned and gave up a walk and hit two batters. Devante’ Taylor (Alcorn State) was brought in for an inning of and allowed one hit, a walk, hit a batter and picked up three strikeouts.

The offensive parade was started by Hassan Evans (Herkimer C.C.) who homered in the bottom of the second inning and gave the DiamondDawgs a quick 3-0 lead. Evans led the DiamondDawgs going 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and four runs batted in (RBI). Tyler Hall (Herkimer C.C.) contributed going 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Evan Wolf (UC Davis), Jesse Buratt (Baton Rouge C.C.) and Eric Helmrich (Marist) all went 1 for 3 for the Dawgs and combined for five runs scored. Helmrich also added a triple and an RBI. Eddie Sorondo (Delaware State) went 1 for 5 and added a run and an RBI while Jack Morrow (Young Harris) went 1 for 5 belting a homerun in the fifth.

The Wizards slim offense came from Donald Walter (Cal Poly Pomona) who homered and went 2 for 5 on the night with a run scored and an RBI. Jordan Enos (Holy Cross) and Conor Dishman (Wabash Valley C.C.) both went 1 for 4 with Enos adding a double while Dishman tripled and scored a run.

The DiamondDawgs return home to Veterans Memorial Park on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 for a 7:05pm contest against the first place Amsterdam Mohawks.
