Cory Haggerty graduated from Ilion High School in 1999 where he was a standout athlete. Haggerty was drafted Chicago White Sox in the 18th round of the 2003 professional baseball draft after a stellar college career for the Red Dragons of State University of New York Cortland. Haggerty fashioned a .335 career batting average at Cortland. He is ranked third at Cortland in career games played (163) and triples (9), fifth in runs scored (147) and total bases (266), seventh in hits (176) and tied for eighth in home runs (15). In 2002 he set a school single-season record with 144 assists and finished the season with a 22-game hitting streak, third-best in school history. He started as the Red Dragons’ designated hitter as a freshman, moved to second base as a sophomore and played shortstop his final two seasons. A team captain as a senior, Haggerty helped Cortland win four straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) titles and qualif y for the NCAA Division III playoffs four times. The Red Dragons advanced to the Division III World Series in both 2000 and 2001, tying for fifth nationally both years. Cortland’s combined record during Haggerty’s four seasons was 136-42 (.764)
Haggerty went on to play minor league baseball for in the Chicago White Sox orgization for 4 years making it as high as AA.
