Coddou only allows two hits, Diamond Dawgs blank Dutchmen 10-0

In their last game against the Saugerties Stallions, the Albany Dutchmen racked up nine runs in a 9-2 victory.

Even that would not have been enough at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Little Falls, as the Dutchmen faced 17 Diamond Dawgs in the seventh and eighth innings, as Mohawk Valley shut out Albany, 10-0.

Mohawk Valley (5-5) would draw first blood only three batters in, as a very long fly ball to right would put Troy Scocca (Syosset, NY/Fairfield University) at third and score Thomas Walraven (Pine Bush, NY/University of New Haven). They would extend the lead to two when a sacrifice fly by JD Osborne (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/Polk State College) would score Scocca. That was all the Diamond Dawgs would get, however, as a pop-up to foul territory would end the inning.

The Diamond Dawgs would extend the lead in the seventh, when Anthony Herrera and Matt Pagano (Cranston, Rhode Island/Marist College) would combine for three RBI’s. They drove bloopers to right and left field, respectively, scoring Anthony Capo (Staten Island, NY/LIU-Brooklyn), Malcolm Kelsey (Piscataway, NJ/St. John Fisher College), and Herrera. That would end the night for Tim Reid (La Verne, California/Azusa Pacific), as he would be pulled for Jake Welch (Spencerport, NY/Notre Dame College), who started the playoff game last year for the Dutchmen (5-5), a 3-2 loss at Vet’s Park.

Both starters, Mohawk Valley’s Payton Coddou (Napoleonville, Louisiana/University of Louisiana-Monroe)and Albany’s Reid pitched gems of sorts for their team. Coddou only allowed two hits through seven innings, while Reid was slightly less spectacular, allowing two runs on five hits.

The Diamond Dawgs would extend the lead to six on a line drive from Capo to score Scocca to round out a very good day for the Mohawk Valley left fielder. Scocca would go 4-5 with three singles, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.

Herrera would score Sam Machonis (Tampa, Florida/Florida Southern) a couple of batters later on a blooper that would freeze the shortstop, to extend the lead to 7-0. Welch would walk Pagano with the bases loaded to extend the lead to eight. A single by Walraven would score Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Indiana/University of Indianapolis) and Herrera again to bat around in the eighth.

Erik Bauer (Putnam Valley, NY/Marist College) would close out the game for Mohawk Valley and would only allow a double from Michael Fitzsimmons (Eads, Tennessee/University of Mississippi), before closing the door on the Dutchmen.

Coddou, in only allowing two hits, got the win for the Diamond Dawgs, evening his record to 1-1. Reid, in only being slightly less brilliant, got the loss, also evening his record to 1-1.

The Dutchmen will head back to Bob Bellizzi Field tomorrow night to take on the Utica Brewers. The Diamond Dawgs will host the Capital City Reds, a team from Ottawa, Canada, in an exhibition “field-trip game” Monday morning before coming back a day later to face the Victor RailRiders in their only trip to Veteran’s Memorial Park in the 2015 season.
